This situation is now set to change, however. On 8 April 2014 Microsoft officially discontinued support of Windows XP, which has been on the market for the last twelve years, thereby laying self-service terminals open to the possibility of security problems. To confront this new situation Auriga has decided to implement GMV’s checker ATM Security® together with its proprietary platform WWS with the express intention of resolving operating-system hardening problems. Checker is a security product now protecting nearly 80,000 ATMs around the world. Checker is fully PCI DSS compliant and provides an integrated ATM security solution, ensuring the security of any ATM or self-service terminal regardless of the installed operating system, including Windows XP. With this solution banks can keep their XP-based ATMs in service until they are phased out at the end of their natural life-cycle without having to resort to complex and demanding operations to update not just the software layers (XSF included), but also the hardware in order to increase processing power and features in line with the requirements of the more recent Microsoft operating systems.
