The Lehnin Training Area in Brück (Potsdam, Germany) was chosen to present the results of this European project in its final demonstration. iMUGS, which stands for Integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System, is part of the objective being pursued by the European Commission, through the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), to bolster the EU’s defense and strategic autonomy capabilities. iMUGS has developed a scalable architecture and design for the application in both manned and unmanned ground and airborne vehicles, serving to standardize European systems and their command and control systems, communications, sensors, payloads, and autonomy algorithms. GMV is part of a consortium of thirteen companies led by Milrem Robotics and has been responsible for coordinating the command and control and C4ISR interoperability subproject, which involved developing a tactical C2ISR component that makes it possible to plan and carry out joint operations of manned and unmanned systems, and to exploit and disseminate sensor data from the unmanned ground vehicle, ensuring the interoperability and standardization of interfaces with existing C2 systems, C4I databases, and ISR networks. Throughout all the demonstrations, the command, control, and communication systems and the autonomous mobility software were tested in a variety of operational scenarios. In this final demonstration, the focus was on demonstrating the system’s swarming and ISR mission capabilities. iMUGS began at the end of 2020 and is scheduled to run for a total of 30 months. It is part of the EDIDP, a European Commission-led program funded by the European Defence Fund (period 2017-2020). The next steps of the project will focus on improving the architecture and design using lessons learned during the demonstrations, as well as a final event showcasing iMUGS' main capabilities. This event is expected to take place in Madrid at the end of April 2023.
