GMV and IntraOp Announce Strategic Agreement to bring 3D Treatment Planning Technology to Electron Beam IORT Users Globally
GMV, the global leader in Intraoperative Radiation Therapy Planning and IntraOp Medical Corporation, the leading innovator in electron radiation therapy devices, , announced they have entered into a strategic agreement to advance the field of oncology. Under the agreement, IntraOp will be the exclusive distributor of GMV’s radiance® (radiance) intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) planning system for electron beam IORT users globally. radiance is the only commercially available treatment planning system designed specifically for IORT.
The IntraOp® Mobetron® is the only self-shielded, portable LINAC capable of providing electron IORT in a standard operating room, unifying surgeons and radiation oncologists as an effective team in the fight against cancer. Electron IORT has been used for locally advanced and recurrent cancers, achieving excellent clinical results in both local control and survival, especially in indications where it is difficult to obtain clear surgical margins such as pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancers, head and neck cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas. For breast cancer the Mobetron can administer in a single, two-minute treatment the equivalent of six weeks of conventional external beam x-ray radiation.
Powered with GMV’s radiance treatment planning system, Mobetron IORT treatments will significantly increase in precision and effectiveness, enabling physicians to simulate and plan treatments in 3D utilizing CT images. Through its high quality multiplanar reconstruction engine, radiance enables physicians to obtain a sophisticated volumetric visualization of the patient treatment area to perform advanced planning and simulation including applicator positioning, contouring, and dose calculations though Pencil Beam and Monte Carlo algorithms. Effects of beam misalignment, gaps, bolus, changes of penumbra and tissue inhomogeneities in realistic patient geometrics, as required in the report of TG-72 of the AAPM, can be properly addressed with radiance.
“We are delighted to be adding radiance to our product portfolio,” stated Derek DeScioli, Vice President Global Sales at IntraOp. “IntraOp has always been at the forefront in advancing IORT technology and radiance represents a significant improvement in the sophistication in treatment planning and delivery, empowering our physicians to deliver better results to their patients,” added DeScioli.
“We are excited to launch this partnership with IntraOp, the electron-beam IORT world leader who shares our vision to transform the world by developing and integrating state-of-the-art technology”, said Luis Fernando Álvarez-Gascón Pérez, General Manager of GMV´s Secure e-Solutions. “Enabling accurate planning of the radio surgical procedure in advance is GMV’s contribution to the safety and optimal results of intraoperative radiotherapy, which we support as the best way to shorten treatment and recovery times for patients”.
