How can we increase the likelihood of success in Big Data projects?

For the fifth year running the Leganés campus of the Madrid university called Universidad Carlos III, shortened to UC3M, has put on the Computer Science and New Technologies Fair called T3chFest, designed to bring students into contact with sector firms and experts.

José Carlos Baquero, Head of the Development and Software-Engineering Division at GMV Secure e-Solutions, gave a paper on the keys to success in Big Data projects. This presentation underlined the main success-boosting factors to be taken onboard in Big Data projects, according to GMV’s experience with this technology. He also talked about some of GMV’s most important projects: security and threat detection, fraud prevention, satellite image processing and agro-climatic sensors, epidemiology, optimization of industrial crude-oil processing, etc.

The chat roamed over the sector in general, where, according to studies, the demand for Big Data skills is still growing and IT executives are hard put to find enough talent with experience in Big Data projects. In a particular interview with Autentia José Carlos stressed that the key point was to understand exactly what the project is all about, the particular problem posed, and from there on work with the best technique to solve it. Above all, it is crucial not to store data just for the sake of it. “Having a lot of data does not guarantee the success of a project” argued José Carlos; it is rather a question of using the best technology for achieving the desired results.

José Carlos wound up by pointing out how important it is, from his point of view, to use Open Source and the cloud. “Open Source lets us play with different, affordable technologies using fairly mature solutions, while the cloud lets us scale up in a more sustainable, low-cost way” the expert added.
