The European Space Agency has awarded GMV a contract for developing the onboard software of the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) system of the Exomars Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module.

The Entry, Descent and Landing Demonstrator Module (EDM) is designed as a blunt-shaped re-entry capsule mounted on the upper side of the Mars Orbiter (TGO). The EDM remains attached to the TGO until approaching Mars and is then released with the correct bearing and touchdown velocity for landing on Mars in daylight and at the selected landing site.

The software developed by GMV will automatically trigger all EDL phases including controlled entry into the Martian atmosphere, parachute deployment and use of thrusters for the landing, all to ensure a safe touchdown.

This project poses a sterling challenge. If successful GMV will have developed the first GNC European software capable of landing on Mars, this will be a real historical feat. Within the project GMV will develop the GNC OBSW code, carry out the unit testing and participate in system validation on TAS-I’s site.
