The responsibility of harnessing available information

10th Health-Excellence Encounter

The 10th Health-Excellence Encounter, organized by Aliad, revolved around two major themes: firstly the processing of information and the opportunities it gives health centers of offering patients a better service and, secondly, the risks run unless the information generated by the health sector is properly protected and kept. GMV argued for the duty of extracting useful data to improve the quality of healthcare, head off epidemics, help research, etc.

Inmaculada Pérez Garro, Director of the Eastern Region of GMV Secure e-Solutions, took part in a panel discussion chaired by Fernando Mugarza, Communication Director of the foundation called Institute for the Development and Integration of Healthcare (Instituto para el Desarrollo e Integración de la Sanidad: IDIS) together with Francisco Javier Dodero de Solano, Corporate Director of Healthcare Continuity of Quirón Salud Madrid, and José Ramón Martínez Cáceres, Director of Certification and Training in TÜV NORD Cualicontrol.

The Director of the Eastern Region, who has led the rollout of Spain’s only nationwide Big-Data-based epidemiology- and clinical-data mining solution, HEXIN, (a project for the Galician Health Service) stressed the importance of “harnessing the invaluable asset of healthcare big data” because “to miss this opportunity would mean falling down on a big responsibility”. She underlined the fact that the obstacles “did not stem from technological incapacity because this technology by now has matured enough for extracting all useful information generated. The problem lay rather in a lack of awareness. What we now need is a cultural change favorable to the sharing of information, collaboration and exploiting all available data in the interests of ongoing knowledge, as HEXIN does, a platform that collects clinical and epidemiological data to generate clinical evidence”.

The event wound up with the award ceremony of Excellent Healthcare Accreditations (Sanidad Excelente Privada: SEP) and the Mercury Program (Programa Mercurio) data-protection accreditation plus Áliad’s recognition of excellent practices among important organizations, groups and companies of the sector.
