The firm with the oldest “.es” domain

GMV is the private firm with the oldest, up-and-running “.es” domain (www.gmv.es) in Spain, according to the analysis carried out by Red.es, the organization responsible for the management of “.es” domains in Spain. This organization, to kick off the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the domain, has recently rendered homage to a hundred universities, public institutions and firms from all Spain’s regions as trailblazers in the registration of internet domains.

Red.es is a public corporation under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism (Ministerio de Industria, Energía y Turismo: MINETUR), whose main remit is to promote the information society in liaison with regional authorities, provincial councils, local authorities and the private ICT sector.

To organize this homage, Red.es, as the body responsible for management of “.es” domains, analyzed the first 200 registered domains. Of these pioneers a total of 116 still run internet portals under the “.es” domain. All Spanish regions are represented though most domains come from Madrid.

Although “.es” domains were founded in 1989, it was not until 1990 that the first one was registered, created by the management authority of these internet domains itself. The first domain outside this organization was taken up by the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands (Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias) in 1991.

With the registration date of 1 February 1992, GMV is the sixth oldest “.es” domain of Madrid and the twentieth of Spain. It was the first “.es” domain registered by a private firm both in Madrid and in Spain. The earlier ones were all universities and private authorities, most research-related (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas, Centro de Estudios de Experimentación y Obras Públicas, Instituto Municipal de Investigación Médica de Barcelona, Universidad de Zaragoza, Universidad de Oviedo, Universidad de Valencia, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Universidad Pública de Navarra and the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrarias, among others).
