End of the TREGA satellite-navigation project training phase

The International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), in collaboration with the European Commission, has carried out the project called Training EGNOS GNSS in Africa (TREGA, for short), designed to increase the safety and cost-effectiveness of Africa’s air navigation and promoted by the EGNOS-Africa Joint Programme Office (JPO).

These training sessions kicked off in 2013 with the aim of coordinating the introduction of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) technology in Sub-Saharan Africa.

EGNOS-Africa JPO has turned to GMV for creating a training and experimentation platform based on its inhouse magicSBAS family of tools. GMV’s activities include training up JPO personnel in the use of the platform, these courses beginning back in October 2013.

Early May this year saw the last training period in the use of magicSBAS. This training has been given in Trieste (Italy), home to ICTP’s campus. Since 1970 this campus has received over 10,000 visitors from Africa, giving them the chance to continue their training or carry out research projects there.

The magicSBAS platform is currently installed in EGNOS-Africa JPO’s headquarters in Dakar (Senegal), where JPO teams have begun working with it.
