GMV and Qilimanjaro work on the first quantum computer in southern Europe

Presentación Quantum Spain en MWC23

GMV and Qilimanjaro will be responsible for building the first quantum computer of the Spanish Supercomputing Network, which will be installed in 2023 in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) and will be integrated into the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, the most powerful in Spain and among the most advanced in Europe and the world. MareNostrum 5 will enable progress in multiple academic fields and will entail another step toward exascale capabilities, the next frontier in supercomputing.

The integration of the new quantum computer in MareNostrum 5 will have the potential of significantly increasing the impact of research and innovation as it enables solutions that complement current supercomputers’ capacities. The new infrastructure will be available to the research community, companies, and public agencies, thereby strengthening technological and industrial development in Spain and the creation of high skilled employment.

The development of this new infrastructure is part of the Quantum Spain initiative, which is promoted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through the Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence (SEDIA) with coordination by BSC. The initiative, funded with Next Generation funds from the European Commission’s Recovery Plan for Europe, is also part of the Digital Spain 2026 program and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ENIA).
